48-inch drivers on Tour
Ok that sounds crazy, 48 inch driver? The standard length on tour is 45 currently. However power house Bryson Dechambeau was using a 47.5 inch shaft last year on his driver and this year is testing a 48 inch version. He is currently No1 for driving distance average on the PGA Tour averaging over 330 Yards. This is changing the golf game as more and more pros turn to the longer club concept.
Should an amateur increase their shaft length? As golf tech makes drivers more forgiving one would say ‘if you can hit it straight increase the length’ and we agree. We suggest testing a variety of shafts, lengths to see if it can add yards to your golf game with sacrificing accuracy.
More wedges
If you visit any golf pro shop you will see an array of golf wedges. All different types of lofts and lies and a slightly different version of the same thing. What we cannot ignore is the best players in the world are adding more wedges to their game. Manufacturers are creating sets of irons with gap wedges as standard alongside the common sand wedge and pitching wedge. Does the average golfer need all these wedges? Some argue for and some argue against; however it’s personal preference.
So as the wedge technology doesn’t effectively alter that much, except maybe material and bounce, the process of picking the right set of wedges is essential. Our suggestion is to get less persuaded by the marketing lessons, but rather try a variety of wedges out go for a club fitting.
3D printing
Who would’ve thought you would see 3D printing brought into golf clubs, especially a putter. Cobra last November revealed a Limited edition King Supersport 35 inch shafted putter that has a 3D printed face. The company say it allows for faster production and more precision. Let’s see what the data says once customers are taking these putters onto the greens.
More Forgiving drivers
This is virtually is the promise of every new driver that is launched. Doesn’t matter if it’s Taylormade with the SIM 2, Wilson with the Staff D9, Mizuno ST-X or Callaway with the Epic Max driver they all boast the same thing; More Distance, More Forgiving. We all agreed golf equipment is getting better and golfers game improvement potential is increasing, but is the money worth the added yard or 2?
Golf Lessons
As this article is about golf tech and not golf lessons directly we will discuss some of the great gadgets that help you, the player, the students of golf, teach yourself better golf swing mechanics and overall golf game improvement. We call it the coach yourself golf coaching concept, but reality would suggest it’s best to do this with friends as a team work always advances the results.
We recently came across a company called Eyelinegolf, we have no affiliation and was recommended by many coaches, that has some incredible golf tech that enables to teach yourself.
One of their products, which has over 100 customer reviews, the check point swing laser literally shows you your swing plane via lights (lasers) attached to your club. This is what the say on the website;
“The system has two lasers attaching to your club – any club. The “down” laser shows you the path of your swing … exactly. The “up” laser will show you the exact plane of your swing in your backswing and downswing”
We’ve seen this golf tech in action and its a great piece of equipment, for all age groups, to coach themselves the perfect swing plane.
Hit It Longer, Hit It Straighter – Thats the title of another product by Eyelinegolf. The Speed trap coaches the player to hit more balls off the centre of the face. This golf tech is a great a lesson on accuracy at contact, guiding you club past brushes that get you focused on position. These 2 aids create the perfect environment for you to massively improve swing accuracy and distance. But more importantly you can coach yourself when golf lessons with coaches are not viable or limited due to locked down world.
Go checkout Eyelinegolf’s website for lessons and other game improvement golf tec for sale. Or head over to Youtube for a golf lesson with a twist.
Club Fitting
Club fitting has always been under-rated by the majority of amateur golfers. As golf technology improves it is essential that you get you clubs (irons, wedges, woods and driver) fitted to your golf swing. Any golf coach that really wants you to improve your golf game would suggest you call or message your local fitting centre and book in a custom fitting to get your set of clubs matched to your swing.
The amount of data the team at most custom fitting centres can gather is mind boggling. As an example the Trackman 4 is a serious piece of golf equipment. It is an accurate launch monitor and can relay information like average impact height on the face of the club, average impact offset, average dynamic. To most people and customers this make no sense, but to the pro club fitters this tells them exactly how to fit a set of clubs to your unique swing. You are effectively getting golf lessons at you club fitting facility at the same time.
Is getting you clubs fitted cost effective? We suggest based on multiple conversations with people just like you, yes! Its’ very common for golfers, all age groups, to swap clubs regularly looking for that magical game change. But when we take the average cost of new clubs over a 2 year period versus the cost of the average fitting, it is way more cost effective to get a club fitting. The lesson here, get you golf clubs fitted and try to lose that relationship with NEW equals better.
Or an alternative is a quick refinishing or repairs of your existing clubs. Most golf courses will have a simple contact us button on their website to the person responsible for these alterations.
